Update

Update 2017: The enforcement of this law is critical to ensure the health of the SJBE,  and our organization will pursue it in future work plans. The law is available on: http://www2.pr.gov/ogp/Bvirtual/leyesreferencia/PDF/Ambientales/172-1996/172-1996.pdf

Update March, 2012: We are now in conversations with the Autoridad de Desperdicios Sólidos (Solid Waste) Agency and the Junta de Calidad Ambiental (Environmental Quality) Agency looking for the person who is responsible for the oil spills in the Island

Update January 2010:  The Law 172 is being applied, although several community leaders have reported cases in Barrio Obrero Marina where repair shops are discharging oil in the storm sewers. 

Previous update:  The SJBEP, as well as other government agencies, are in the process of determining effective enforcement strategies for the proper enforcement of the Used Oil Management Law.  The Partnership has organized educational and volunteer activities focused on this issue.


Strategies  
WS-11.1 Evaluate the possibility of increasing the enforcement of law No. 172.
WS-11.2 Develop additional enforcement mechanisms.
WS-11.3 Modify existing regulations, if necessary.
