Update

Update 2017:Our collaboration with the Corporación del Proyecto ENLACE del Caño Martín Peña, DNER and the San Juan Municipality is an ongoing effort toward the improvement of the Martín Peña Channel. Through the Urban Waters Ambassador, efforts to improve flow in the Martín Peña and relocate  families Living Adjacent to the Channel have being completed. The SJBEP’s Environmental Scientist Dr. Bauzá, is part of the Feasibility Study for the Dredging of the Martín Peña Channel. Dr. Bauzá provide a technical memorandum with water quality data, a list of recreational and commercial fisheries in the SJBE and a list of the tropical Caribbean species that depend on the mangroves.

On April 29, 2013, Governor Alejandro García Padilla announced the investment of 100 million dollars during 2012-16 for the improvement of the Special District of the Martín Peña Channel, including 30 million for sanitary sewage.

Update March, 2012: mprove flow in the Caño Martín Peña. The LINK project to Caño Martín Peña is in the process of completing a feasibility study at a cost of $ 1.2 million contract with the company Atkins. Atkins has a contract with the Caño Martín Peña to complete the feasibility study related to the dredging process. The Caño Martín Peña project is a key point of the permits to dredge the spout and this must be finished for this year.

Update January 2010:  The SJBEP is actively involved in the Feasibility Study required for the dredging of Caño Martín Peña.

Previous update: The dredging of the Martin Peña Channel is one of the most important and visible actions included in the CCMP.  The SJBEP has been a key component throughout the decision making process, and an active participant in educational activities regarding this project.
The US Congress authorized in 2007 the amount of $125,000,000 for the dredging of the Martín Peña Channel and the PR Government  will provides an additional $25,000,000 products of  the latter PR Bonds emissions. The funds are to be managed by the public corporation Proyecto Enlace Caño Martín Peña.


Strategies  
WS-5.1 Conduct Alternative Analysis.
WS-5.2 Prepare a design memorandum and environmental impact statement (eis) for the selected channel alternative.
WS-5.3 Relocate affected families. Begin construction of housing and relocation of those families located in the selected channel pathway.
WS-5.4 Construction and improvement of infrastructure and related utilities.
W5-5.5 Dredge the martín peña channel.
