Action Relocate families living adjacent to the Martín Peña Channel

Update July, 2017:The relocation process of the families is an ongoing effort that is successfully lead by the Corporación del Proyecto ENLACE del Caño Martín Peña. Photos showing new residences for families can be found on the Facebook page of Enlace: Proyecto ENLACE del Caño Martín Peña.

Through the Urban Waters Ambassador, efforts to improve Flow in the Martin Peña and facilitate the relocation of families Living Adjacent to the Channel have been completed.

Update March, 2012: In the year 2010-11 the SJBEP relocated 8 to 10 families who have been relocated from Caño Martín Peña margins on an ongoing resettlement process. The problem is that one relocation cost about $125,000. When you add 10 relocations, the total goes over $ 1,000,000. The SJBEP has to relocate an estimated 600 families.

Also in 2010-2011 the SJBEP have relocated an average of 10 families and the Península de Cantera Project also made massive relocations. The Península de Cantera Project has done relocations in areas of El Caño, and large complexes have been built even in the past to relocate the families.

Update January 2010 - Caño Martín Peña

WS-2.1 Conduct a public poll in the communities to learn people's concerns about the relocation of families.
WS-2.2 Approach community residents to explain how the dredging project will affect their community, including the benefits of the project on quality of life. Psychological and emotional support should be available from the puerto rico family department for those families affected by the relocation. In addition, environmental justice assessment may need to be performed as implementation proceeds.
WS-2.3 Identify those structures located next to the martín peña channel that will be affected by the dredging of the channel
WS-2.4 Study the different alternatives and procedures for relocating families within the community
WS-2.5 Identify and/or acquire lands for the relocation of families.
WS-2.6 Complete a land ownership subdivision study and purchase or expropriate (as applicable) private property next to the channel which is not public domain.
WS-2.7 Implement selected relocation alternatives from step 2.4.
WS-2.8 Relocate families to the new facilities.
