GI-3 PROMOTE THE USE OF ALTERNATE MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION, SUCH AS BICYCLES, IN THE CONTEXT OF SMART GROWTH

 

Update 2017: This year USEPA awarded the Caño Marín Peña with funding for Smart Growth Implementation Assistance. Work is still in progress, but already 5 typologies for green infrastructure functions have been defined and are being developed with the expectation of receiving schematics and cost estimates that allow for seeking funding/financing opportunities.

 

 

3.1 Publicize the “Complete Streets” alternative in the SJBE watershed. Participants in implementation: Municipality of San Juan (principal), PRDTPW, Planning Board

3.2 Develop an educational campaign on the benefits of bicycling and walking and on bike routes related to the Estuary. Participants in implementation: SJBEP (principal), municipality of San Juan, Planning Board, PRDNER

 

Implementation: Long-term

 

3.3 Collaborate with governmental agencies to develop educational tours for cyclists in areas such as Old San Juan, the Condado, the San Juan Ecological Corridor, and the Enrique Martí Coll Park. Participants in implementation: Municipality of San Juan (principal), SJBEP, PRDNER

 

Implementation: Medium-term

 

3.4 Develop alliances with existing cycling groups to better integrate/coordinate these groups’ activities with SJBEP activities. This could include development of a bike route along points of interest in the SJBE. Participants in implementation: SJBEP (principal), PR Cyclists Coalition, Bike Hanging Out, PR Fixed, municipality of San Juan

3.5 Encourage greater integration of bicycles into public transportation (buses and Tren Urbano) in San Juan, including installation of bike racks on city buses. Participants in implementation: Metropolitan Bus Authority (principal), PRDTPW

 

Implementation: Long-term

 

3.6 Encourage installation of bike racks at strategic points in San Juan to allow use of bicycles throughout the estuary. The Puerto Rico Tourism Company, under the Green Hotel Program, promotes bike racks. Participants in implementation: Municipalities in the watershed (principals), PRDTPW, Puerto Rico Tourism Company

3.7 Encourage expanding the Transit Safety Commission’s campaigns to share roadways with cyclists, and development of other educational campaigns on the benefits of cycling. Participants in implementation: Transit Safety Commission (principal), PRDTPW

3.8 Encourage establishment of an interpretive route or path through the SJBE watershed that can be traveled on bicycle. Participantes en la Implantación: Transit Safety Commission (principal), PRDTPW, PRDNER, SJBEP, cycling community
